Poppy Power!

SHALOM
(means hello, goodbye and peace in Hebrew)

Silent Film Queen Theda Bara on magazine cover, with poppy

One of the flowers of the month of August is the

POPPY

As promised, here is a little blog on the meanings of the flower Poppy,
some Poppy trivia and fun facts,
and some pretty poppy things!

Now, we have a problem with the August flower of the month.
I have already covered glads (see previous post, gladiolus).
I find that flower on most web sites.
Then the debate starts.
Many sites say the Poppy is the other flower for August,
or even the only flower for August.
But some sites say that the Dahlia is the flower for August.
And some sites quote only the Gladiola!

I like poppies.
I have always liked poppies. The wild california poppy is probably
my most favorite flower for a garden. It grows relatively wild here.

Before I met this variety however, I loved the big red poppies!

Back before DVDs and VHS (can you imagine?)
we waited every year for 'The Wizard of Oz' to show on the tv.
There were favorite, classic movies that would show every year,
sometimes twice a year if we were lucky!

The familiar scene where Dorothy and her friends can see the Emerald City,
but have to walk through a beautiful field of poppies.
Magic poppies.
Sleeeepy poppies.....

'Poppy Field', 1991
I love this oil painting by Charles Santore

Oh no! What will we do? What will we do?

and Glinda, the Good Witch of the North
sends healing snow to counter the sleep affect of the magic poppies....

What beautiful poppies!

The Poppy, in the Victorian era, meant Consolation.

A Red poppy meant consolation, or pleasure.

A yellow poppy meant wealth and success.

That's it for today.
I do have more fun poppy facts,
plus more pretty pictures
and glads
and state flowers
and national flowers -

Who knew the flower girl had so much to do?

Have a super day,
